Moxibustion Therapy

What Is Moxibustion Therapy?

Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy in which dried plant materials called “moxa” are burned on or very near the surface of the skin. The intention is to warm and invigorate the flow of Qi in the body and dispel certain pathogenic influences.

Can Moxa Help?

Moxibustion is used for:

Pain due to injury or arthritis, especially in “cold” patterns where the pain naturally feels better with the application of heat.

Digestive problems and irregular elimination.

Gynecological and obstetrical conditions, including breech presentation in late term pregnancy.

Protection against cold and flu strains.

Can Moxibustion Help Turn Breech Babies?

Moxibustion can have a significant effect in helping to turn breech babies. Ideally treatment is carried at 33-35 weeks, but can still be useful when used later in the pregnancy. Moxibustion can also help babies that are not breech but are not in the optimal position prior to birth, such as those in a  posterior position.

How Does Moxa Work?

Moxa produces heat that can gently stimulate the body and is used to: Regulate or move qi and blood. An example is to promote movement of fluids and increase circulation within our body. Expel cold and dampness. This helps relieve muscular stiffness, pain or swelling that is not warm to the touch.
